The Tennessee Volunteers are on the verge of a significant upgrade through the transfer portal, with strong indications that Zalance Heard, a former LSU offensive tackle, may be making his way to Rocky Top. According to a report by 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz, there is an “expectation” that Heard will choose to transfer to Tennessee.
The expectation is that former LSU five-star offensive tackle Lance Heard is going to transfer to Tennessee, sources tell @247sports.@SWiltfong247 had previously posted that the Vols were in strong position with the Class of 2023 top-15 overall recruit.… pic.twitter.com/Zb68TLRGDk

Securing Heard would be a substantial acquisition for the Vols, given his standing as the 18th overall player in the transfer portal and the third-highest ranked player yet to commit. In the 2023 class, Heard was initially a top-15 overall recruit who committed to the LSU Tigers over other notable schools such as Nebraska, Baylor, and Colorado.
Having played in 12 games for the Tigers in 2023, Heard demonstrated his skills at the right tackle position. However, it’s been reported that his dissatisfaction with not playing on the left side played a role in his decision to transfer. This presents an opportunity for the Volunteers to benefit from his talents.
With the departure of former starter Gerald Mincey to Kentucky during the offseason, the Vols are in need of reinforcements on the offensive line, making Heard’s potential transfer particularly timely.
Tennessee has added multiple pieces in the portal already
The Vols have already gained some talent this offseason. Former Tulane wide receiver Chris Brazzell, former Oregon State cornerback Jermod McCoy, and former Notre Dame tight end Holden Staes are the team’s most significant signings so far.
