Josh Hader explains his decision to join the Astros
The Houston Astros have a history of reacting forcefully if there is any reason to believe otherwise. The team is in some doubt as a result of the signing of reputable catcher Martin Maldonado to the Chicago White Sox and the entry of many relievers into MLB free agency. That worry was, however, substantially allayed by Josh Hader’s signing.
On January 19, the top reliever reached an agreement with the Astros worth $95 million over five years, making him one of the highest-paid bullpen components ever. The price tag may worry many who are already hesitant to shell out enormous sums of money for a reliever, particularly considering that Edwin Diaz sustained a season-ending injury almost away following the signing of his historic contract with the New York Mets in November 2022. Hader’s arrival, though, will offer Houston a great opportunity to challenge for yet another championship.
The sentiment is shared by both parties. The five-time All-Star told MLB Network that winning a World Series was the most important factor in his decision to enter free agency. “That has been done by the Houston Astros.Being on the field allows you to witness when a team is clicking, and we wanted to be a part of that.
For seven straight seasons, the Astros have made it to the American League Championship Series or higher. For the San Diego Padres in 2023, Josh Hader recorded a 1.28 ERA with 85 strikeouts in 56 1/3 innings pitched. For two sides that are firmly in win-now mode, this feels like the ideal combination, despite the financial risk.
Since the Chicago Cubs acquired Hector Neris from Houston, general manager Dana Brown may still be looking for bullpen support. However, the back end is definitely set in stone.
