Eddie Howe makes intriguing Dan Burn claim after £69m Newcastle United change

NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, ENGLAND - MARCH 04: Newcastle United Head Coach Eddie Howe speaks to the media in the first face to face press conference since the Covid Pandemic began at the Newcastle United Training Centre on March 04, 2022 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

Newcastle United 4–4. Luton Town: After his team’s draw at St. James’ Park, Eddie Howe was questioned about his strategies.

Newcastle United experienced their first draw at St James’ Park this season, battling back from a 4-2 deficit to finish 4-4 against Luton Town.

The opening moments saw a bright start for Newcastle, as Sean Longstaff scored just six minutes into the match. Although Gabriel Osho equalized, Longstaff once again put The Magpies in the lead. However, Luton managed to level the score once more, with Ross Barkley finding the net.

Just after the hour, Carlton Morris and Elijah Adebayo scored two goals in quick succession to put the Hatters ahead 4-2, but 11 minutes later, Kieran Trippier and Harvey Barnes from Newcastle tied the score once more.

The Magpies found their way back into the game after the substitutions of Tino Livramento and Harvey Barnes, who replaced Dan Burn and Miguel Almiron. Burn, in particular, faced a challenging afternoon, struggling against the pace of Chiedozie Ogbene on Luton’s right side.

The left-back’s difficulties were evident as he conceded a penalty for a foul on Ogbene, resulting in a conversion by Morris. Additionally, Burn lost possession in the buildup to Luton’s fourth goal. Subsequently, he was substituted, and the St James’ Park crowd began chanting Livramento’s name before his introduction.

Newcastle’s captain, Kieran Trippier, was observed encouraging Livramento as the young player warmed up on the touchline before entering the game with the team trailing 4-2.

Talking about his adjustments, Howe stated: “At the precise moment when that [Luton’s fourth goal] occurs, your only thought is ‘How can I help the team?'”

“The emotions you live with now after the game; in the moment, it’s about ‘What can we do to try to get back in the match?'”

The Magpies manager was asked why, in light of Burn’s difficulties before Luton took the lead, he didn’t implement the changes earlier.

Howe continued, “You have multiple things to focus on when you’re in my shoes.” It’s never quite that simple.

Eddie Howe acknowledged Luton as a formidable team, emphasizing their anticipated threat from set-plays, which proved evident in the first goal Newcastle conceded. Howe admitted that Luton’s proficiency down the right side caused problems, highlighting an area that requires attention and reflection. Defensively, the team struggled throughout the match, lacking a sense of complete security.

Despite the challenges, Howe came to the defense of Dan Burn, asserting that the defender’s position in the starting lineup was well-earned. Howe praised Burn’s outstanding contributions since joining the club, citing his significant role in the previous successful season and the team’s impressive defensive record. Just four days earlier, Howe had regarded Burn’s performance against Aston Villa as magnificent.

“We performed so brilliantly because of him in large part. Tino is a fantastic talent who will undoubtedly have a significant impact on our future. However, as I already mentioned, I consider a number of factors while selecting the team.

Newcastle’s next game is away to Nottingham Forest, where Howe will have to make a number of important decisions over his starting lineup.
