After an impressive six-year tenure, former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel will not have a head coaching job for the 2024 NFL season.
On The Athletic Football Show, NFL insider Dianna Russini disclosed that Vrabel’s physical size was mentioned by a general manager at the Senior Bowl as a possible barrier to getting a new coaching position.
“I don’t believe he was a good fit.” At the Senior Bowl, a general manager highlighted to me Vrabel’s physical stature, stating that he is a tall man who can be scary to those in an organization who would be involved in these choices. And that does have a role,” Russini stated.
Vrabel’s commanding stature at 6’4″ and 261 pounds could have contributed to the impression that he wasn’t a good fit for decision-makers and possible owners.
Russini also conjectured that, with NFL teams recently favoring younger head coaches, Vrabel’s age of 48 could have made it harder for him to get interest from teams.
Vrabel’s 13-21 record in the previous two seasons seems to have hurt his marketability, even though he led the Titans to the playoffs in three of his six seasons. Following Vrabel’s exit, Brian Callahan, a former offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals, was named head coach of the Titans.
