Newcastle United make FA Cup announcement after Sunderland controversy

When Newcastle United visits Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup fifth round later this month, they will have the support of yet another sizable away fan base.

On Tuesday, February 27 at Ewood Park (kickoff at 7:45 p.m.), Eddie Howe’s team will play the Championship team. About 7,000 tickets will be available for purchase to Magpies supporters. The cost of tickets is £20 for adults, £10 for concessions (18–23 years old and above 65), and £5 for children under the age of 18.

In the third round last month, United was cheered on by 6,000 fans, much to the chagrin of its fierce rivals from Tyne and Wear.

“I am writing to express my shock and disappointment at the announcement that Newcastle fans have been allocated an incredible 6,000 tickets for next month’s derby match at the Stadium of Light,” said Conservative councillor Dominic McDonough.

“Having watched several derby games as a longtime Sunderland supporter (more than 25 years), I believe this is a poor decision that might exacerbate tensions amongst supporters. 6,000 spectators will need to be securely escorted to the stadium, which would require a massive and expensive police operation that will put undue strain on policemen and club officials.”

Nonetheless, Northumbria Police handled the game expertly, causing few issues when Newcastle supporters were forced to take scheduled coaches from

Naturally, there won’t be as much anxiety when Newcastle comes to Ewood Park, and the police presence won’t be quite as stringent. However, there is still a lot to play for, as a spot in the quarterfinals is at stake.

Wembley away for two games
In the previous round, Newcastle defeated Fulham 2-0 on the road to earn a trip to Lancashire. United would be one game away from a Wembley semi-final if they could defeat Blackburn.

Season ticket holders with 30 or more away points could purchase tickets starting at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 6. Points will be deducted twice a day, at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., subject to availability; weekends are excluded.
