Two former defensive linemen for Texas football, junior Byron Murphy II and redshirt senior T’Vondre Sweat, might be taken on Day 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft in a few months. Murphy and Sweat are predicted by numerous prominent NFL Draft media publications to be selected on either Day 1 or Day 2 (at the latest) in late April.
Murphy is the Texas defensive tackle prospect receiving the most attention from the media right now out of these two elite prospects for the NFL Draft. Murphy has been projected as one of the top 10 or 15 picks in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft by a few reputable sports media sites.

Among the media that have improved Murphy’s draft prospects in recent weeks are CBS Sports and their rankings and mock drafts.
For instance, in his most recent NFL mock draft for 2024, Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports forecasts Murphy to be selected by the Los Angeles Chargers with the fifth overall pick. In his most recent 2024 mock draft, Trapasso selected Murphy as the first defensive tackle off the board this week.
Sweat and Murphy were two of CBS’s top 10 defensive tackles in the 2024 draft.
For the 2024 NFL Draft, CBS is more high on Murphy than they are on Sweat. In CBS Sports’ prospect rankings for this class, Murphy is ranked as the top defensive tackler and the fifteenth overall.
In contrast, Sweat is rated as the 58th overall and sixth defensive tackle prospect in this draft class.
