Dan Burn, the defender for Newcastle United, was benched for the trip to Arsenal, but when he entered the game during the 4-1 loss at the Emirates, the Geordie gave the finest comeback imaginable.

Eddie Howe disclosed that Tino Livramento experienced an early setback against Arsenal, hampering the Newcastle United defender’s performance in the 4-1 loss. Despite Newcastle’s defensive challenges, Howe believed Livramento’s vigor was crucial, especially against the swift Bukayo Saka, who had netted six goals in his previous four league matches. Despite patiently awaiting his second start of 2024, the night turned out to be a harsh reality for Newcastle, with the team trailing 4-0 with 20 minutes remaining, even with the talented young Livramento in the lineup.

Jakub Kiwior’s fourth goal prompted Eddie Howe to initiate a triple substitution, introducing Dan Burn, Jamaal Lascelles, and Joe Willock. Surprisingly, instead of dwelling on being benched, Burn displayed a determination to prove himself and delivered a strong performance from the sidelines. Burn’s impactful contribution included setting up Willock’s header for Newcastle’s sole goal of the night. Additionally, the Magpies defender showcased defensive prowess by clearing the ball off the line, preventing Emile Smith Rowe from securing a fifth goal for Arsenal in the late stages of the match.

Howe must now decide whether to bring Burn back for Tuesday night’s crucial FA Cup match against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park or to stay with Livramento after ‘quite a shift to the team’.

In a statement to BBC Radio Newcastle, Eddie Howe commented on Tino Livramento’s preparation, stating, “Tino has had a strong week of training; he’s been outstanding. Unfortunately, he sustained an early knock in the game, which might have affected his performance. I believed we required his strengths in the team today. However, I also acknowledge that we missed Dan’s qualities, particularly evident in the two set-plays that led to goals.”
