Despite the loss to Arsenal, Eddie Howe was pleased to have both Joe Willock and Alexander Isak back in his lineup over the weekend. Willock’s involvement was especially thrilling because he hadn’t played since November.
Elliot Anderson may also be joining them as they both aim to participate in tonight’s FA Cup match against Blackburn Rovers. Due to a back issue, he has been absent since October, although there is a remote possibility he will make an appearance at Ewood Park.
The boy from the area has returned to training following an extended break, and the same is true for another long-term victim of Newcastle United.
Matt Targett was back in Newcastle training on Monday
As per the information from the Telegraph, Matt Targett rejoined Newcastle United’s training on Monday. He participated alongside Anderson after being absent due to a hamstring injury since November 1st. Targett sustained the injury during the Carabao Cup victory against Manchester United and hadn’t been visible in action since then. However, in line with Eddie Howe’s recent statement about Targett nearing a return to training, the 28-year-old’s comeback has now been confirmed.
The footballer acquired for £15 million is just one among several Newcastle players facing challenging seasons. This has been the narrative for Matt Targett since his transfer from Aston Villa to Tyneside became permanent in 2022. Persistent injury issues have plagued his time with the club, compounded by witnessing Dan Burn excel in his position.
However, the tables have turned as Burn is currently struggling, making Targett’s return to fitness opportune. There’s a possibility of him swiftly reclaiming a spot in the starting lineup, provided he can maintain his fitness.
With Targett and Anderson resuming training, Newcastle’s injury list has significantly shortened. The next anticipated return is likely to be Nick Pope, followed by Joelinton and Callum Wilson. Unfortunately, the latter two might be ruled out for the remainder of the season due to undergoing surgery.
