After a challenging 45-point defeat at the hands of Melbourne in Round 1, concerns are arising regarding the balance of the Western Bulldogs’ forward line. The underwhelming performances from key forwards Aaron Naughton (one goal, six disposals) and Rory Lobb (one goal, seven disposals) have intensified scrutiny on Luke Beveridge’s goal-scoring options at the beginning of the 2024 season.
Meanwhile, the anticipation surrounding Sam Darcy, who was selected at Pick #2 and is a father-son pick, continues to grow. Darcy, standing at an imposing 208cm, has long been touted as a future star, earning recognition such as the club’s Best First Year award in 2022. However, his development has been hindered by injuries, limiting him to just seven games across his two years on the Bulldogs’ list.
Fellow host Mark Robinson didn’t mince words in his criticism of Beveridge’s players following their performance against Melbourne. In a segment unofficially labeling the Western Bulldogs as the biggest losers of Round 1, Robinson expressed disappointment, particularly highlighting concerns over the team’s new recruits.
Fox Footy’s David King had previously suggested that the Bulldogs should consider deploying Naughton in defense. However, Beveridge dismissed this idea last June, stating firmly that Naughton would not be moving behind the ball anytime soon.
Currently, with Jamarra Ugle-Hagan, Lobb, and Naughton all featuring in Beveridge’s forward line, it appears unlikely that the Bulldogs will regularly field a fourth key forward.
The burning question on the minds of many is how Luke Beveridge can integrate young talent Sam Darcy into the Western Bulldogs lineup without displacing one of their established key forwards.
The Bulldogs will travel to Mars Stadium in Ballarat this Sunday for a showdown against the undefeated Gold Coast Suns, with the match commencing at 1pm AEDT.
Meanwhile, their VFL affiliate, Footscray, will kick off their season against the GWS reserves one hour earlier at Whitten Oval.
