In the 2023-24 season, Newcastle United did not manage to replicate their impressive performance in the Champions League from the previous season.
Sam Allardyce suggests that Eddie Howe was not provided with the necessary resources at Newcastle United to navigate through a Champions League campaign successfully. Despite the arrival of four first-team players last summer after the Magpies’ top-four finish, questions have arisen for the first time about Newcastle’s recruitment since the Saudi-backed takeover.
Sandro Tonali, a marquee signing, showcased promise on his debut but was only able to make 12 appearances before receiving a 10-month ban due to violating betting regulations. Meanwhile, Harvey Barnes, another anticipated arrival meant to bolster the starting lineup, has largely been sidelined throughout the campaign due to injury.
Tino Livramento has stood out as the most promising player and appears to have the potential to become a future England full-back. However, the signing of Lewis Hall has raised uncertainties rather than providing clarity. Despite joining Newcastle on loan with an obligation-to-buy clause, Hall has seen minimal playing time under Howe, especially amidst a significant injury crisis.
Throughout the season, Newcastle’s squad has appeared thin, compounded by a series of setbacks on the treatment table. As a result, the team has slipped to 10th place in the Premier League, with very little to no chance of replicating their Champions League success.
While Newcastle United is still in contention for a European spot, their decline in form this season has served as a reality check for their long-term aspirations. Speaking on the Tippy Tappy Football podcast, former Newcastle and Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce advised the club’s ownership to remain committed to Eddie Howe.
“Eddie Howe never had the squad depth required to handle the demands of the Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and Premier League,” he stated. “Their current position reflects the limitations of the squad’s size.
“However, despite the challenges and the less-than-ideal season, there’s been speculation about his future. I hope the owners or anyone else involved aren’t considering a change just yet.”
