The 24-year-old midfielder has featured in 27 Serie A matches for Atalanta this season, finding the net five times.
Newcastle is eager to secure Ederson’s signature to strengthen their midfield, but they now face competition from Spanish giants. Atletico Madrid has emerged as a new contender in the race for his services.
According to reports from ontheminute, Atletico’s head coach Diego Simeone is interested in enhancing his team’s midfield and is considering the Brazilian, who is valued at €30 million.
The contract of cult hero Joelinton is set to expire in 2025, and there hasn’t been any update on the negotiations since Amanda Staveley took over from Dan Ashworth, who was handling the renewal talks before being placed on gardening leave.
According to WhoScored, Ederson is a player known for his love of tackling and is particularly proficient in that aspect. Similar to Joelinton, he excels in winning aerial duels and isn’t afraid to get stuck in to regain possession.
Additionally, like Joelinton, Ederson has shown a tendency for a hot streak, accumulating nine yellow cards across all competitions throughout the season.
Ederson joining means more stability for Eddie Howe in the midfield.
Having Joelinton in the squad presents the exciting possibility of fielding an all-Brazilian midfield trio, which could potentially be a formidable combination.
Currently, Newcastle’s midfield lacks depth, with Eddie Howe having to rely on players like Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock, and the promising but still developing 17-year-old Lewis Miley, alongside the traditional front three of Joelinton, Bruno, and Tonali.
While Miley has shown promise, his youth means he still has much to learn before becoming a consistent starter. Longstaff has been hampered by an ankle injury all season and may require surgery, while Willock has also faced injury issues and is still finding his form this season.
Bringing in another experienced midfield option would alleviate some of the pressure on Howe’s shoulders and provide valuable depth to the squad.
