On Wednesday, April 3, the New York Jets will welcome Rome Odunze, a wide receiver for Washington, for a top-30 visit, according to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report NFL Insider.
To Schultz, an NFL scout with much experience compared Odunze to Davante Adams “but bigger.” At the line of scrimmage, observe his releases. Some of Adams’s basketball moves are similar to his. Rome is a day one star and a classic X.
The Jets Can Get the Next Best Thing at Wide Receiver
This offseason, Gang Green intended to go get the actual Davante Adams.
The Las Vegas Raiders rejected their attempt to trade for him during the previous season. Back in November, ESPN’s Adam Schefter stated that he anticipated the Jets “will make another run” to sign Adams in the offseason.
The Raiders stated early in the offseason that they had no plans to trade him. Additionally, wide receiver Mike Williams, a free agent, was signed by New York to a $10 million, one-year contract that included $8.3 million in guaranteed pay.
If Adams isn’t available this offseason, Odunze might be the best option available to the Jets.
The 21-year-old Odunze improved tremendously over each of his four years as a Washington student. He made progress each year in all of the main statistical categories, such as touchdowns, receiving yards per reception, yards gained, and catches.
He had an incredible last campaign throughout his time in college. He hauled in 13 touchdowns and had 92 grabs for 1,640 receiving yards.
Jets Have a Chance to Reach a New Level on Offense
In the first round of the 2024 NFL draft, the green and white are ranked No. 10 overall.
It “feels unlikely” that any of the top three wide receivers get to that stage, according to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic. The previously mentioned Odunze, Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr., and LSU’s Malik Nabers are the position’s consensus big three.
Rosenblatt did state that Odunze is the “most likely” of the three wide receivers to be selected with the tenth overall choice, “even if it’s a small chance.”
Rosenblatt said, “If he does, the Jets would probably grab him, giving them maybe the best wide receiver trio in the league with Odunze, Garrett Wilson, and Williams.”
Although the Jets boast a strong wide receiver tandem, Williams just suffered an ACL tear. Williams’ recuperation still has “a long way to go,” according to head coach Robert Saleh, who made this revelation at the Annual League Meeting.
Although the organization hopes that their high-paid receiver will be ready for the season opener, general manager Joe Douglas does not anticipate his readiness for training camp.
All of which is to say that, just in case, the Jets had best have a solid insurance policy on Williams. In addition to potentially making an impact right away, Odunze would fit in as Wilson’s long-term running partner in this Jets attack for the ensuing ten years.
NFL draft expert Lance Zierlein stated, “It shouldn’t surprise if Odunze is a Day 1 starter who becomes a top-flight WR1 because elite ball skills are often the secret sauce for top NFL receivers.”
