Following a deadlock until the top of the sixth inning, the LSU softball squad managed to break the silence with a solitary run. However, the Florida Gators swiftly countered, scoring four runs in the bottom of the same inning to clinch a 4-2 victory in the opening game of their three-game series held in Gainesville, Florida, on Saturday.
The Tigers, with a record of 30-5 overall and 8-5 in SEC play, seized the lead as Ciara Briggs, Taylor Pleasants, and Raeleen Gutierrez consecutively delivered singles in the top of the sixth inning. Gutierrez’s hit allowed Briggs to cross home plate, putting LSU ahead.
Florida, boasting a record of 33-5 overall and 8-2 in conference play, promptly responded by unleashing an offensive onslaught in the sixth inning, notching four of their six hits in the game off LSU’s ace pitcher, Sydney Berzon. The pivotal moment arrived when Reagan Walsh smashed a three-run home run on a 1-2 count with two outs, extending Florida’s lead to 4-1.
In the seventh inning, LSU attempted a comeback with Ali Newland driving in a run with a single. However, their hopes were dashed as Briggs struck out to conclude the game.
