Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has indicated that they are likely to select a quarterback in the upcoming NFL draft, but acknowledges the challenge of finding the right fit. The team recently abandoned their pursuit of Russell Wilson, opting to release the former Seahawks quarterback after lackluster performances in the AFC West.
With only Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci on their roster, the Broncos are eyeing the opportunity to draft a quarterback from this year’s highly anticipated draft class. Holding the 12th overall pick, Payton and general manager George Paton discussed their strategy during a press conference, emphasizing the importance of making the correct choice.
Payton stated, “Do we have to draft a quarterback? You’d say it sure looks like we have to draft a quarterback.” However, he stressed the need for the selection to be the right fit for the team, likening the process to solving a puzzle.
Paton echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the significance of hitting on their first pick and not forcing a selection. He expressed openness to the possibility of trading up for a player who could have a transformative impact on the franchise.
Regarding the quarterback prospects, Paton mentioned that they are monitoring as many as eight quarterbacks, highlighting the depth of talent in this year’s class. He expressed confidence in finding a quarterback early in the draft as well as in the mid-rounds, emphasizing their belief in the potential of multiple prospects available.
