Just In: Southampton’s worst injury fears confirmed with key player out until 2025

Throughout the entire 2023/24 season, Southampton has entrusted Irish international Bazunu with the starting goalkeeper position.

The goalkeeper had featured in every minute of every Championship game until he withdrew from the warm-up ahead of Tuesday night’s match against Preston North End. Alex McCarthy stepped in to replace him, marking his first league appearance of the season.

Concerns were immediately raised regarding Bazunu’s injury, with Martin expressing post-game that the situation appeared grim, and reports indicating he had sustained an Achilles injury. Now, leading up to this weekend’s clash with Cardiff City, Southampton’s worst fears have been realized.

Bazunu facing long spell out

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s match, Southampton boss Martin has confirmed that Bazunu has undergone surgery on his Achilles, sidelining him for nine to 10 months. Daily Echo reporter George Rees-Julian shared this update on X.

Expanding on the setback, Martin emphasized that Bazunu, the former Manchester City starlet, will receive all the necessary support following this significant blow.

“A career is never linear. I don’t know many who start their career and it keeps going up,” he said, a sentiment also conveyed by Rees-Julian.

“Gavin has had a huge setback, there will be some dark and lonely moments over the next 10 months. We will support him and get around him.”

Replacements available

With Bazunu sidelined, Southampton now face the decision between backup goalkeepers McCarthy and Joe Lumley. McCarthy stepped in during the week following Bazunu’s injury, but Lumley has seen more game time and has been regularly involved in Championship matchday squads, while McCarthy has often been on the sidelines.

McCarthy brings Premier League experience and has previously been involved with the England setup, which could make him the preferred choice. However, Lumley is no stranger to second-tier football and has served as the number two goalkeeper on more occasions this season.

Regardless of who takes the reins for the remaining games of the season, Bazunu’s injury is a significant blow for Southampton. With surgery now completed, his journey toward recovery and regaining fitness begins.
