In recent years, Nottingham Forest has earned a reputation for nurturing young talent, providing them with first-team opportunities at the club before embarking on successful careers across Europe. Ryan Yates, the current captain of the Reds, emerged through the ranks of the Nigel Doughty Academy. He made his way into the first-team setup in 2019 after enjoying several productive loan spells in the EFL.

Aston Villa right-back Matty Cash exemplifies the quality of players emerging from the club’s academy. Under former manager Sabri Lamouchi, Cash transitioned from playing in the final third to excelling in the defensive role. His impressive performances earned him a move to the Premier League, joining Villa in a £16 million deal in 2020.

Both players have experienced different levels of success since making their professional debuts at Forest. However, the club also made astute business decisions by selling another academy graduate just a year before Cash’s departure.

Arvin Appiah’s stats at Nottingham Forest

Winger Arvin Appiah made swift strides through the Forest youth system, showcasing immense potential to thrive at the City Ground, evident in his call-ups for various England youth teams. His notable attributes included pace and direct dribbling, which caught the attention of many.

In October 2018, he received his first-team call-up for the EFL Cup match against Burton Albion. Appiah made his debut as an 85th-minute substitute, marking the occasion by scoring a goal, despite Forest’s disappointing loss to lower-league opposition.

Since his transfer to Spain, the now 23-year-old has made only 62 appearances for Almeria. Additionally, he has been sent on four separate loan spells, including a stint at Rotherham United in the Championship during the current campaign.

He has featured 26 times in England’s second tier this season, failing to score and only providing one assist for Rotherham United in what has been a dismal campaign for the team. They have suffered relegation, losing 28 of their 43 games so far.

Due to his disappointing performances in recent years, Appiah’s market value has plummeted to just £420k, according to Transfermarkt. Remarkably, this valuation places him below veteran midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate, who, despite being 34 years old, is valued at £850k.

Appiah’s value has plummeted by over £6.4m since his departure from the City Ground. Forest could utilize the funds generated from the transfer to sidestep any Financial Fair Play (FFP) penalties in the Championship.

His rapid decline is undeniably disheartening, especially considering the potential he displayed during his time at Forest. Appiah now faces a pivotal decision regarding his next move if he hopes to fulfill his full potential. With his contract in Spain set to expire this summer, the youngster must carefully consider his options in order to revive his career.
