Duke secured its second transfer portal commitment this offseason with Mason Gillis joining the team.

Duke Basketball recently secured commitments from two players, Maliq Brown on Saturday and Mason Gillis today, amidst the dynamic landscape of the transfer portal. Gillis, a seasoned swingman from Purdue’s Final Four roster, adds invaluable experience to Duke’s roster, particularly as they welcome six true freshmen, including two of college basketball’s youngest players, Cooper Flagg and Khaman Maluach.

Standing at 6’6″ and weighing 225 pounds, Gillis brings elite perimeter shooting abilities, boasting a career three-point shooting percentage of 47%, including a remarkable 46.8% during his senior year. Renowned for his toughness on the court, Gillis also maintains an impressive 2:1 assist-to-turnover ratio, capitalizing on his final year of eligibility as a super senior after four years at Purdue.

His arrival fills the gap left by Jared McCain, who declared his intention to enter the NBA Draft earlier this month, and enhances Duke’s lineup versatility, as Gillis can proficiently play positions 2, 3, or 4 depending on the opponent.

Duke has bolstered its roster by adding two players through the transfer portal, aiming to fill the void left by the departure of seven players in April: Christian Reeves, Mark Mitchell, Jaylen Blakes, Jaden Schutt, Jeremy Roach, TJ Power, and Sean Stewart. Additionally, Kyle Filipowski (NBA), Jared McCain (NBA), and Ryan Young (graduation) have also moved on from the team since the end of the season.

The Blue Devils are reportedly targeting one more impact guard via the transfer portal to complete their rotation, focusing on someone who can drive, distribute the ball, and provide defensive support for projected starting guards Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster. With this addition, Duke’s roster would consist of eleven scholarship players, leaving room to finalize the roster with two non-scholarship players.
