Breaking News: Detroit Lions decision over 3x Pro Bowler Contract

The Detroit Lions negotiated to contract extensions with offensive tackle Penei Sewell and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown this summer, demonstrating their aggressiveness in locking up some of their own talent. It seems the team is still tying players to long-term contracts, though.

General manager of the Detroit Lions Brad Holmes said during a Thursday appearance on WXYT that the team is in talks to extend quarterback Jared Goff’s contract.

Above all, he deserves to have his time extended. We value it greatly, give it top priority, and are working extremely hard on it; these things simply take time. Thank you, Detroit Free Press

As a member of the Los Angeles Rams, Jared Goff signed a four-year, $134 million contract ($110 million guaranteed). He is currently in the final season of the deal. The former first-overall choice has performed admirably thus far in his career, going 66-50-1 with 67.3% completion percentage for 30,429 yards, 185 touchdown passes to 82 interceptions.

Three-time Pro Bowler Goff is getting ready for a possible Super Bowl run following the Giants’ defeat in the NFC Championship Game.

What quarterbacks have the largest contracts right now?

While it is unlikely to reach Patrick Mahomes’ current $450 million contract, it is easier to look at the average salary. The biggest thing that happens in contract extensions is surpassing the highest to keep pushing the rock forward. The average yearly salary of the top 10 quarterbacks at this time is shown below.

Joe Burrow: US$55,000,000
Justin Herbert: $52.5 million
Lamar Jackson is worth $52 million.
Jalen Hurts: $51,000,000.
Kyler Murray is worth $46,780,000.
Deshaun Watson: $46,500,000
$45 million for Patrick Mahomes
Cousin Kirk: $45 million
Josh Allen is worth $43 million.
Daniel Jones, Matthew Stafford, and Dak Prescott; $40 million

What should we expect out of the Detroit Lions this season?

The Lions are a young, talented squad that is starting to pay players. The team’s excellent offense is mostly carried over from the previous campaign. But they addressed their weak secondary by selecting Missouri cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in Round 2 and Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold in the first round.

Things won’t be easy, as the division gets better, the Green Bay Packers gain a year more of team cohesion and make major changes, and the Chicago Bears entirely reinvent their franchise. Don’t ignore the Lions, though, who finished as the third seed in the NFC Championship after winning the NFC North the previous season and winning two playoff games. They also dominated the first half of the game before succumbing.

It should be possible for the Detroit Lions to win the division once more this season, therefore it will be interesting to watch how the schedule is laid out when it is released the following week.
