Breaking News: Just In A former Leafs defender has officially returned home.

Nikita Zaitsev, a former Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman, has decided to return to his native Russia, signing a three-year contract with SKA Saint Petersburg in the KHL following a difficult final season in the NHL.
Nikita Zaitsev’s journey from the KHL to the NHL was defined by early success, followed by several years of struggle, culminating in his return to Russia. In 2016, Zaitsev crossed the Atlantic, encouraged by the Toronto Maple Leafs, who regarded him as a future defensive powerhouse. He had an excellent rookie season, scoring 4 goals and 36 points in 82 games while averaging 22:01 minutes on the ice.

Encouraged by his early success, the Leafs signed Zaitsev to a seven-year, $31.5 million contract, viewing him as a long-term asset on their blue line. However, this optimism lasted just a short time. Zaitsev struggled to match his initial scoring performance in succeeding seasons, prompting a trade to the Ottawa Senators in the summer of 2019.

Zaitsev’s fortunes fluctuated during his time in Ottawa. He was a regular on the ice at first, but his importance gradually declined, and he was finally traded to the Chicago Blackhawks to relieve salary cap demands. To sweeten the transaction, Chicago received a 2023 second-rounder and a 2026 fourth-round pick.

Zaitsev’s stint with the Blackhawks was plagued by a series of injuries, which kept him out of the lineup on a regular basis owing to a variety of health difficulties, like an upper-body injury, illness, and a knee condition. His participation was limited to 38 games, during which he scored only 7 points and saw his ice time cut to a career low of 15:55 minutes per game.

Following these disappointments, Zaitsev has decided to end his NHL career, which lasted eight seasons and 482 games, and pursue his career in Russia. His decision indicates a move toward stability and a return to familiar territory, which might revitalize his career in a league where he previously excelled.
