ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – Early Wednesday morning, William Byrd athlete Israel Hairston committed to furthering his athletic career at his dream school, Virginia Tech.
Hairston, the Terrier quarterback, signed his letter of intent as a preferred walk-on for Virginia Tech’s football team.
In addition to excelling in four sports during high school, Hairston maintained a GPA above 4.0 and was honored as the Class 3 VHSL Scholar Athlete of the Year.
After signing, he expressed his excitement about Virginia Tech recognizing both his athletic and academic talents.
“It was amazing,” he said. “Attending Virginia Tech has been a childhood dream of mine, just like many kids in Virginia. Having that opportunity was fantastic for me. Throughout my recruiting process, I aimed to find a school with a strong engineering program, which is my lifelong passion and a path followed by my brother and dad. Virginia Tech felt like the perfect fit for me.”
