Newcastle United have submitted a bid to sign Barcelona winger Ferran Torres, according to reports.
Eddie Howe will be under significant pressure to deliver next season after Newcastle United missed out on European qualification in 2023/24. While the Magpies’ Champions League nights against teams like Dortmund, AC Milan, and PSG were unforgettable, fans will not be satisfied with just a one-time experience.
Given the fiercely competitive nature of the Premier League, Newcastle will likely need to invest in key areas to remain competitive, especially since they finished eight points behind in the race for the top four.
According to Spanish outlet Jijantes, Newcastle have submitted an offer of €15 million plus €5 million in add-ons for Ferran Torres. This bid is a substantial decrease from the reported £46.7 million that Barcelona paid Manchester City up-front for his services back in 2021.
The Pep seal of approval?
Daily Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards has dismissed the rumor, posting on X that there is “no truth in the claims Newcastle have made a bid for Ferran Torres.” However, Newcastle fans are likely hoping Edwards is mistaken.
Despite the rumor being quashed, the prospect of signing Torres would be enticing for Newcastle. Last season, Torres managed 10 goals and three assists in 37 combined La Liga and Champions League appearances, even though he started only 15 of those games.
The 24-year-old also has an impressive record with the Spanish national team, scoring 19 goals and providing four assists in 41 senior caps. His international performances include six goals in major tournaments like the World Cup, European Championships, and UEFA Nations League finals.
Moreover, Torres was praised by Pep Guardiola, who called him “exceptional” during their time together at Manchester City.
