Information about the Miami Dolphins’ intention to sign 37-year-old defensive tackle and former Pro Bowl player Calais Campbell to a deal was leaked last Thursday. The South Florida franchise officially announced the signing on Tuesday morning via the traditional social media post.
Originally selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft, Campbell is set to begin his 17th NFL season with the Dolphins in 2024. Over his distinguished career, he has played for the Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars, Baltimore Ravens, and Atlanta Falcons, accumulating 105.5 sacks in 244 games. Additionally, Campbell has recorded 865 combined tackles, 17 forced fumbles, 13 fumble recoveries, and three interceptions, according to Pro Football Reference.
Campbell’s tenure in Baltimore coincided with the Dolphins’ new defensive coordinator, Anthony Weaver, for two seasons. Although he played primarily as a defensive end for the Falcons in 2023, his time with the Ravens under Weaver’s coaching saw him mostly in the defensive tackle role.
At 37 years old, Campbell’s versatility will greatly benefit Miami, especially since EDGE rushers Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips ended the 2023 season on injured reserve and may not be available at the start of the 2024 season. Should they miss the beginning of the season, Campbell could support rookies Chop Robinson and Mo Kamara, along with veteran Shaq Barrett, on the outside. Once Chubb and Phillips return, Campbell can transition inside and form a formidable partnership with Zach Sieler at defensive tackle.
