Report: Rangers in to sign elite free agent winger to long-term contract

The New York Rangers are currently exploring options for a first-line right winger to play alongside Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider. With free agency opening in just under two weeks, the Blueshirts should be able to find a suitable candidate looking for a new contract with a Stanley Cup contender.

According to Peter Baugh of The Athletic, New York showed interest in acquiring an elite winger at the trade deadline last season, but the Blueshirts couldn’t finalize the deal. However, this veteran forward is set to become a free agent this summer, making him a strong candidate to join the Rangers for the upcoming season.

Rangers could look to sign Tyler Toffoli in free agency

Tyler Toffoli had an outstanding season, splitting his time between the New Jersey Devils and the Winnipeg Jets. He accumulated 55 points in 79 games, with 33 of those points coming from goals. Toffoli has scored over 30 goals in each of the past two seasons, revitalizing his career.

At 32 years old, Toffoli stands at 6’0″ and weighs 203 pounds. His size and skillset make him a valuable asset who could help Zibanejad and Kreider overcome their challenges, making him a strong candidate for Chris Drury to consider as free agency approaches. Although his age could be a concern, Toffoli has shown no signs of slowing down in the last two seasons.

Toffoli will reportedly be looking for a long-term contract to end his career

Peter Baugh of The Athletic reports that as Tyler Toffoli approaches the end of his career at 32 years old, he is likely seeking a larger contract, possibly around four years at over $5 million annually. The Rangers would likely prefer to avoid such a commitment, as having an aging veteran on the roster in four years could exacerbate their salary cap issues.

If the Rangers can negotiate a lower annual average value (AAV) for Toffoli’s contract, signing him to play on the first line would be sensible. However, extending a 32-year-old veteran for four more years at a high price point carries significant risks. Chris Drury will need to decide whether he can make it work with Toffoli or if the Rangers should explore other options.
