Mavericks offseason preview: Key moves after Finals loss

The Dallas Mavericks’ postseason strategy has started to take shape after their NBA Finals defeat at the hands of the Boston Celtics. It is very clear that they must bolster their core of Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic, who took the team to the finals as soon as they provided him with a strong supporting group.

Dereck Lively II, who appears to be the second coming of Tyson Chandler, has a bright future in this league. Trading for PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford was this team’s best move. With more practice and time together, this team should only grow better; but, they must address their lack of depth.

Mavericks offseason plan: A Breakdown

Jason Kidd has garnered considerable attention this season. Despite a rocky beginning to his coaching career, he has evolved into a skilled tactician known for his adept adjustments.

Considering this, let’s delve into the Mavericks’ plans and current situation, presenting our preview of their offseason.

Upcoming Mavericks free agents

The Dallas Mavericks have few significant free agents to address. They might consider re-signing Markieff Morris on a veteran minimum deal to maintain his veteran leadership and physical presence, especially to protect Doncic if needed. However, they are likely to part ways with Brandon Williams and Greg Brown III.

Derrick Jones Jr. emerges as their primary free agent of interest, having finished the season strongly. Yet, the Mavericks could hesitate to overspend on him and may need to create cap space to retain him without breaching the NBA luxury tax threshold.

Improving their shooting is a clear priority, especially with Tim Hardaway Jr. potentially being traded after a disappointing end to the season.

Maxi Kleber could also be on the trading block, having seen limited postseason action due to injury and potentially becoming less essential with other players like PJ Washington, Dereck Lively, and Daniel Gafford excelling.

Potential Mavericks targets

The Dallas Mavericks didn’t focus much on this year’s NBA Draft prospects since they hold only the 58th overall pick, the last in the draft. As a result, they are turning their attention towards free agency.

The scenario could change if they decide to trade Josh Green, who has shown promise and could potentially bring back another draft pick. However, such a move seems unlikely now given Green’s strong finish to the season and his role as one of their dependable shooters.

Currently, the Mavericks have the Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception, valued at approximately $5.1 million, which could be crucial in acquiring a solid rotational player for depth.

In terms of targets, they are eyeing guards like Patrick Beverley, Kris Dunn, Tyus Jones, Kyle Lowry, and Monte Morris. For wings, options include Malik Beasley, Gary Trent Jr., Alec Burks, Royce O’Neale, Lonnie Walker IV, along with potential additions like Haywood Highsmith and Dario Saric.

Securing a marquee player in the offseason seems challenging for the Mavericks. While there’s a slim chance they could pursue Chris Paul if he becomes a free agent and the Golden State Warriors allow it, Paul’s current form suggests he may not be the star he once was.

Despite this, the Mavericks have demonstrated they are close to contending. As long as Luka Doncic remains healthy, they could surprise as a dark horse. It’s hoped that Doncic learns from setbacks, improves his fitness, and maintains composure, crucial steps for his continued success.
