Over his last six games, Guerrero has five home runs, five doubles, and 19 RBI.
As part of Toronto’s lopsided 9-3 victory (box score) over the New York Yankees on Saturday afternoon, Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. carried on with his recent onslaught. Guerrero hit a two-run home run and a double with the bases loaded to go 3-for-5 with six runs batted in. (In a run, he also singled.)
Check out Guerrero’s 13th home run of the year right here. It was against Nestor Cortes in the first inning, and it traveled 403 feet at an exit velocity of 106.5 mph.
Guerrero, 25, arrived on Saturday with a hit.291/.369/.456 (136 OPS+) with 44 runs batted in and 12 home homers. Lately, he’s been especially productive. He is 14-for-29 with five home runs, five doubles, and 19 RBI in his last six games.
The beginning of trade season is a terrific moment for him to be on a hot streak. It’s uncertain if Guerrero and other veterans will be made available by the Blue Jays before the July 30 deadline. As of Saturday, the team had a 37-44 record and a 7 1/2 game deficit in the American League wild-card race. However, considering that Guerrero is expected to become eligible for free agency after the 2025 season, doing so would make some sense.
Coincidentally, Guerrero has been particularly effective offensively in three recent games against the Yankees, a team currently missing their starting first baseman and designated hitter. Despite having once declared his reluctance to ever join the Yankees, Guerrero has recently adjusted his stance on the matter.
“I am a professional, I go out onto the field and play,” Guerrero stated. “… Sometimes you say things – it’s not that I am retracting what I said about the Yankees, I stand by my words – but this is a business. I had a conversation with my dad and my family, and this is a business … Like I said, I am a player, and if a team picks me or does something, it’s because they need it, obviously, and I will be happy to help any team. But right now, I am just focused on helping my team get out of this bad streak.”
Even if the Blue Jays decide to entertain offers for Guerrero, they might find it hard to accept trading him within the division or to the Yankees. Therefore, Guerrero’s previous comments are likely to remain irrelevant at this point in time.
