The San Antonio Spurs may still be a ways off from making a serious run for the NBA title, but it’s clear they’re on the right track.

A major reason for their positive direction is Victor Wembanyama. As one of the most notable Rookie of the Year recipients in recent memory, he made a significant impact in his debut season, and his star is expected to shine even brighter in the future.

Additionally, the excitement surrounding the team is fueled by key acquisitions made by the front office to support Wembanyama. Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes bring valuable experience, playmaking, and shooting, which will greatly enhance Gregg Popovich’s team.

However, Popovich recognizes the need for another shooter to make the squad playoff-worthy. While one sharpshooter has already been linked to the team, another intriguing prospect could also be a target.

Gary Trent Jr. 'May Have Overplayed His Hand' During Free Agency

Analyst believes San Antonio Spurs can make a mid-level exception for Gary Trent Jr.

Tyler Watts from Air Alamo identified three potential targets for the Spurs using a mid-level exception, a mechanism that allows teams to sign players without exceeding their salary cap. One of the names mentioned was Toronto Raptors guard Gary Trent Jr.

Watts provided a compelling argument for the Spurs to consider Trent Jr.:

Although there are concerns about his defense and efficiency, the pool of available free agents is shrinking. Trent Jr. can score, stretch the floor, and make crucial shots. He has the size and athleticism to be competent defensively. There is a lot to like about Trent Jr., and he would offer significant value if signed for the room exception.

Last season, Gary Trent Jr. was an important part of Toronto’s rotation, averaging 13.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 42.6% from the field and 39.3% from three-point range. If the Spurs sign him, he would provide the instant offense they sorely lacked last season.
