Thompson High School in Alabama is set to have multiple players drafted this year. Outfielder D’Marion Terrell is among them, being selected No. 577 overall in the 19th round by the Toronto Blue Jays. A late bloomer in the cycle, Terrell is seen as having tremendous potential.

Initially, Terrell was going to start his college baseball career at Northwest Florida State, a Junior College. However, his impressive senior season at Thompson attracted the attention of the in-state Auburn Tigers, who secured his commitment.

Terrell’s outstanding stats prompted Auburn to join his recruitment. He achieved a batting average of .426 with 55 hits, 20 walks, and just 17 strikeouts in 129 at-bats. He nearly matched his RBIs with his runs scored, recording 41 runs and 42 RBIs.

He frequently hit extra bases, leading the area in home runs with 10, and adding 10 doubles and four triples, resulting in an OPS of 1.318.

Now, Terrell faces a decision about his future. Auburn’s head coach Butch Thompson secured his commitment, and Terrell will likely be welcomed warmly. The Tigers, coming off a tough season, are looking to regain their winning form.

Additionally, he now has the opportunity to turn professional with the TEAM NAME. Not a bad position to be in just months after graduating high school.

What MLB scouts are saying about D’Marion Terrell

Terrell was ranked as the No. 153 overall prospect heading into the draft by MLB.com, which also provided a scouting report.

“Terrell’s raw power is his best attribute, as he has 25-30 homer potential thanks to the strength and leverage in his 6-foot-3, 206-pound frame,” the scouting report said. “There are mixed reports on his hitting ability, though his proponents like his gap-to-gap approach, plate discipline, and pitch recognition. He has a sound left-handed swing with impressive bat speed, though he won’t fully tap into his pop until he improves his timing.”

Defensively, MLB.com projects Terrell as a left fielder due to his “average” arm. However, if there’s an opportunity to play a different position, first base could be a possibility for Terrell. Some development would be necessary, but “the payoff could be huge.”
