Expectations were modest when the Canadiens picked Florian Xhekaj in the fourth round (101st overall) of the 2023 draft.
However, things have changed since last summer.
The reason? Florian has shown remarkable progress. He had an outstanding season in the OHL in 2023-24, demonstrating an impressive scoring ability that was unexpected when he was drafted.
Florian will enter fall training camp determined to make an impression on Montreal’s management. There has been talk recently that he might start the season with Laval in the AHL.
He possesses qualities that could adapt well to the professional game, making him one of the most intriguing players to watch at camp.
But Florian’s ambitions go beyond just turning pro.
He aims to follow his brother’s path and play for Montreal next season.
In his words to Stu Cowan:
“I’m confident. I want to be with the Montreal Canadiens this year. That’s why I’m here.”
We know Florian as a hockey player and what he brings to the rink, especially after his impressive season in Brantford. But as you get to know Florian Xhekaj’s personality, one thing stands out: his self-confidence.
Seeing his brother make it to the NHL straight out of junior has inspired him like never before. Florian wants to follow in Arber’s footsteps and is doing everything he can to make it happen.
This determination might be what allows him to progress quickly in the NHL, as he’s working tirelessly to achieve his goal.
However, he still needs to prove himself. The Canadiens won’t give him special treatment just because he’s good-looking and athletic.
The good news is that Florian knows exactly how to impress Habs management, with Arber having paved the way for him.
