A seasoned blueliner in Manhattan has landed a good bargain.
Ryan Lindgren, a defenseman, signed a one-year, $4.5 million contract with the New York Rangers on Tuesday. The deal was finalized for the 2024–25 season.
Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet broke the news of the signing first.
Lindgren had initially filed for arbitration. The new contract allows the 26-year-old to become an unrestricted free agent after the next season.
The Minneapolis, Minnesota native just completed a three-year contract with a cap hit of $3 million. The $4.5 million is a projected value for his next contract. Lindgren is coming off his fifth season with the Rangers, during which he scored three goals and 14 assists. His 17 points are just one short of his career-high set during the 2022-23 season. He has scored at least 15 points in each of the last four seasons.
Originally drafted by the Boston Bruins in the second round, 49th overall, of the 2016 NHL Draft, Lindgren was traded to the Rangers in the deal that sent Rick Nash to the Bruins before the 2017-18 trade deadline.
Over parts of six seasons with the Rangers, Lindgren has played in 333 games, scoring 10 goals and 70 assists, including 11 points in 43 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Lindgren became a highly regarded prospect during his amateur days. At the University of Minnesota, he was a two-time Big Ten All-Star Team Honorable Mention. He has also represented the United States in various international tournaments, winning silver at the 2014 World Under-17 Challenge, bronze at the 2016 IIHF Men’s Under-18 World Championship, and gold at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship.
