There’s no doubt that Luka Doncic is one of the best players in the entire NBA. Doncic led the league in scoring for the first time in his career last season, and many argued he was unjustly denied the 2023-24 MVP award.
Seemingly using this snub as motivation, Doncic led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2011 during the 2024 NBA Playoffs. Although the Mavs fell short against the Celtics, Doncic’s status as an elite player for years to come is unquestioned.
However, there is one notable area that critics say Doncic needs to improve. If he were to address this major issue, he would become even more unstoppable than he already is.
Luka Doncic must stop complaining to the referees to reach full potential
Since entering the NBA in 2018, Luka Doncic has been known for frequently complaining to referees during games. This tendency was particularly evident during the 2024 NBA Playoffs, drawing significant attention.
In Game 3 of the 2024 NBA Finals, the Mavericks lost, and Doncic fouled out, immediately voicing his frustration to the officials. Reports surfaced that Doncic apologized to his teammates for fouling out, and it was revealed that Mavs players “begged him” to stop whining to referees. This plea from his teammates indicates their frustration with his behavior. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst heavily criticized Doncic for his actions when he fouled out in Game 3.
While being competitive is a vital trait in sports, incessant complaining to referees can be detrimental. Doncic is undeniably competitive, but when he focuses on arguing rather than playing, it becomes an issue. When he concentrated solely on playing the game during the playoffs, it had a positive impact on his performance. Doncic is at his best when all his energy is directed towards playing, not arguing.
All players argue with referees at times, but when it hinders their ability to get back on defense, it becomes a problem. Doncic’s competitiveness is also evident in his trash-talking. A notable instance occurred during Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals against the Timberwolves when he shouted, “Who’s crying now, [expletive]?” to a Minnesota fan after an and-one, with Snoop Dogg watching courtside.
Losing the 2024 Finals could be a humbling experience for the 25-year-old Doncic, potentially leading to greater maturity. Elite players often need such moments to help them grow. NBA Hall of Famer Grant Hill highlighted the importance of maturity and gamesmanship in dealing with officials.
“I think one of the key aspects is the maturity and gamesmanship involved in interacting with officials,” Hill said. “You have to pick and choose your spots. If you’re constantly getting on them and getting distracted by that game within the game, then you become a problem.”
If Doncic can reduce his complaints to referees, he would become even more unstoppable. Entering the 2024-25 season, he is poised to win his first MVP and lead the Mavs on another deep playoff run. By minimizing his complaining, Doncic could conserve energy and get back on defense quicker, both of which are crucial for his continued improvement and success.
