The Philadelphia Phillies have provided updates on several injured players:
**Alec Bohm (Left Hand Strain)**
Bohm was placed on the 10-day injured list (IL) due to a left-hand strain, retroactive to September 3. He first felt discomfort after fouling off a pitch during an August 29 game against the Braves. X-rays showed no structural damage, and manager Rob Thomson initially feared a hamate injury but was relieved it wasn’t serious. Bohm remained on the active roster for six days before the Phillies decided to place him on the IL. Infielder Buddy Kennedy was recalled to fill his spot.
**Austin Hays (Kidney Infection)**
Hays was placed on the 10-day IL retroactive to September 2, following the development of a kidney infection. Initially, the Phillies thought antibiotics would suffice, but Hays’ condition worsened. He was sent back to Philadelphia for further testing. Manager Rob Thomson expressed uncertainty about how long Hays’ recovery might take.
**Andrew Painter (Tommy John Surgery)**
Painter, the Phillies’ top prospect, underwent Tommy John surgery on July 25, 2023, and is expected to return in 2025. He threw to batters for the first time since his spring training debut earlier this year. Painter reportedly hit 97-99 mph with his fastball during a 15-pitch session. If his next live batting practice session on September 7 goes well, he will continue throwing every three days.
**Spencer Turnbull (Right Lat Strain)**
Turnbull is working his way back from a right lat strain and is currently throwing up to 120 feet. Due to limited time left in the season, if he returns, it will likely be in a relief role. He is set to throw a bullpen session this week, though the Phillies are unsure if he will return before the season ends.
**Luis Ortiz (Tommy John Surgery)**
Ortiz underwent Tommy John surgery on July 11, 2023, and remains on the 15-day injured list. His recovery timeline has not been updated since the surgery.
These injury updates provide a glimpse into the current status of the Phillies’ roster as the team manages its depth heading into the final stretch of the season.
