Although he has kept in touch with the UVA coaches, Micah Matthews, who was present at the Virginia/Maryland game on Saturday night, is still devoted to the Hokies.
Earlier this month, Virginia Tech football commit Matthew Outten switched his commitment to Penn State after initially pledging to the Hokies earlier in the summer. This unexpected decision came just two days after Virginia Tech’s overtime loss to Vanderbilt on Labor Day Weekend. Was the performance the cause of his flip? It’s unclear, but it raises questions. Meanwhile, another Class of 2025 commit for Virginia Tech, four-star athlete Micah Matthews, attended a game featuring the Hokies’ in-state rival last weekend.
Matthews, who committed to Virginia Tech for both football and baseball over the summer, was present at Virginia’s non-conference matchup against Maryland in Charlottesville. He told 247Sports’ Brian Dohn that the visit was for personal reasons.
Micah Matthews maintains his commitment to Virginia Tech
Despite attending the game, Matthews affirmed that he remains committed to the Hokies for both sports and plans to be in Blacksburg for the upcoming game against Rutgers. However, he also revealed that he’s been in touch with Virginia’s coaching staff. Interpret that as you will.
“I am 100% committed to VT and will be there next week vs. Rutgers,” Matthews told 247Sports.
He explained, “I’m friends with some of the guys on the [Virginia] team, and my high school had a game in Charlottesville Friday night. A few of them wanted to come out but couldn’t, so I decided to visit with my dad, as it’s probably my last chance to do so.”
Ranked as the No. 4 athlete in the Class of 2025, Matthews is a key recruit for both Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry and baseball coach John Szefc. Expected to play wide receiver at the collegiate level, he also commented on Virginia’s offense, noting it “looks pretty fun, and their wide receivers play a big role.”
While Matthews insists he’s still committed to the Hokies, his recent activity is worth keeping an eye on moving forward.
