Former Ivy League Player of the Year Kaitlyn Chen has announced her commitment to transfer to the University of Connecticut (UConn) after spending the past three seasons at Princeton. Chen, who shared the news on social media, will be joining the Huskies for her final year of eligibility.
At Princeton, Chen thrived under the guidance of head coach Carla Berube, a former UConn player herself. During her time with the Tigers, Chen earned first-team All-Ivy honors in both 2023 and 2024. Her freshman season in 2020-21 was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and as Ivy League rules prevent graduate students from participating in athletics, she sought out another program to complete her collegiate career.
Chen, a 5-foot-9 guard from San Marino, California, was an integral part of Princeton’s success. Last season, she averaged 15.8 points, 4.9 assists, and 1.3 steals per game, leading to her recognition as a WBCA honorable mention All-American. During her Ivy League Player of the Year season in 2022, she averaged 16.2 points per game, showcasing her scoring ability and leadership on the court.
Chen’s impact extended beyond individual stats, as she helped Princeton win three Ivy League tournament championships, earning the title of Most Outstanding Player each time. She also led the Tigers to three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. The Tigers’ dominance under Chen’s leadership was evident as they claimed at least a share of the Ivy League crown in each of the past six seasons.
Her transfer to UConn comes at a crucial time, as the Huskies look to strengthen their backcourt following the departure of standout guard Nika Muhl to the WNBA. Chen’s arrival will help compensate for that loss while adding depth and experience to UConn’s already strong roster.
The Huskies still boast a formidable lineup, headlined by 2021 national player of the year Paige Bueckers, rising sophomore KK Arnold, and sharpshooter Azzi Fudd. With Chen’s playmaking abilities and experience, UConn’s guard rotation is expected to be one of the most talented in the country.
Chen’s transfer not only boosts UConn’s roster but also gives her the opportunity to compete at a high level in one of the nation’s premier women’s basketball programs. As she joins the Huskies for her final collegiate season, Chen is set to make a significant impact as the team gears up for another national title run.
