Amari Cooper’s trade to Bills more proof of Jerry Jones past Cowboys failures

This is the Dallas Cowboys’ bye week, and they’re not feeling good. On Sunday, Jerry Jones’ birthday, Dallas lost to Detroit in a crushing rout. With a 3-3 record during their bye week, they are currently looking for answers. A former NFL player criticized Jerry Jones as a general manager by citing a recent deal as an example.

Amari Cooper's trade to Bills more proof of Jerry Jones past Cowboys failures

On The Get Up, former NFL wide receiver Andrew Hawkins cited Jones’ incompetence as an example of the Bills dealing for Amari Cooper.
“The Buffalo Bills acquired Amari Cooper in a recent deal. What, a third-round selection? Hawkins stated that the Dallas Cowboys acquired him for a first-round pick and traded him away three years ago for a fifth-round pick. “Come to think about it, three years older, on a losing team, and they still received more money in the midst of the season than the Dallas Cowboys received three years prior, at his prime, during an off-season in which every receiver who was moved received a first-round pick. That is, period, poor general management.

In his criticism of Jerry Jones, Hawkins makes some really good arguments.

His claim that other elite wide receivers have been moved for more than a fifth-round pick is supported by a few instances. AJ Brown, Tyreek Hill, and Davante Adams (who went from the Packers to the Raiders) are a few examples of players that were traded for valuable draft picks. In addition, a large cap hit or the possibility of a significant contract extension for the player after the trade were included in each of these transactions.

Notably, Jones is the only NFL owner who also serves as general manager. While Jones has performed admirably in his role as general manager, he is not as good as other talent evaluators in the league.
