Done Deal: Just In Kyle Shanahan Announced The Signing Of Former Superbowl Winner To Boost Squad

The San Francisco 49ers have re-signed defensive end Jonathan Garvin to their practice squad, per his agency. This move comes as the team deals with uncertainty surrounding Nick Bosa’s health. Further updates on Bosa’s injury status are expected, which could clarify the reasoning behind Garvin’s return.

Garvin originally joined the 49ers during training camp on a one-year deal but has been shuffled between the active roster and practice squad since then. Before signing with San Francisco, Garvin played in the United Football League (UFL) following a three-year stint with the Green Bay Packers from 2020 to 2022. His time with the Packers included limited defensive contributions, with his most active season being in 2021 when he recorded 1.5 sacks.

The 49ers initially released Garvin in September, and he has not played a single snap on defense or special teams for any team this season. His return raises questions about the team’s depth at the edge rusher position.

San Francisco’s pass rush heavily relies on Bosa, who, alongside Leonard Floyd and Sam Okuayinonu, is one of the team’s few dependable edge defenders. While Yetur Gross-Matos returned to action last week, other contributors, like Robert Beal Jr., have made minimal impact, potentially prompting the team to bring back Garvin as an insurance option.

Garvin’s signing may indicate concerns about Bosa’s availability for upcoming games. Head coach Kyle Shanahan is expected to provide updates on Bosa’s injury later in the week, shedding light on whether this move is simply to add depth for practice or if it signals a more significant need for reinforcements. If Bosa is unable to practice, Garvin offers the team a temporary solution to fill gaps during practice sessions while Bosa rests.

While it remains unclear whether Garvin will see game action, his familiarity with the 49ers’ system could make him a useful short-term addition as the team navigates its injury challenges. The 49ers will continue to monitor Bosa’s condition closely, as his availability is crucial to maintaining the effectiveness of their pass rush.
