Good News: Just In Green Bay Packers Officially Re-Sign Former QB Supertstar To Booster Squad

Green Bay Packers Re-Sign Former QB/WR After Marshawn Lloyd News

The Green Bay Packers made several unexpected roster adjustments this week, starting with activating rookie running back Marshawn Lloyd to their 53-man roster ahead of their win over the Chicago Bears. Lloyd, sidelined since Week 2 due to an ankle injury, had recently resumed practicing. However, an unforeseen complication arose when he required emergency appendix removal over the weekend.

This medical emergency left the Packers in a challenging position. Since Lloyd’s 21-day practice window had already been opened, they couldn’t return him to injured reserve without ending his season. To navigate this, the Packers utilized an alternative approach by placing Lloyd on the non-football injury list.

Non-Football Injury List Provides Flexibility

By adding Lloyd to the active roster first, the team could classify his appendicitis—a non-football-related condition—as grounds for placement on the non-football injury list. This move ensures that Lloyd will miss a few games for recovery but allows him to return later this season without being shut down entirely.

As Lloyd’s transition to the non-football injury list created an open roster spot, the Packers decided to bring back a versatile and familiar player to fill the gap.

Alex McGough Returns to Green Bay

The Packers re-signed Alex McGough, a former quarterback turned wide receiver, to the practice squad. McGough originally joined the Packers in 2023, signing ahead of training camp after a standout season as the UFL MVP. Though released during the final roster cuts, he was quickly brought back to the practice squad, where his skills caught attention late last season.

McGough’s versatility became evident during practice sessions. Known for his strong passing and receiving abilities, he occasionally ran routes against the Packers’ starting defense, including a notable collision with star cornerback Jaire Alexander that sidelined the Pro Bowler briefly.

This offseason, the Packers asked McGough to transition permanently to wide receiver. Although injuries limited his participation, he agreed to the switch, demonstrating his commitment to the team. After being released with an injury settlement earlier this year, McGough now returns to provide depth and versatility for Green Bay.

Looking Ahead

With Marshawn Lloyd’s status temporarily on hold, McGough’s return offers the Packers additional options as they adapt to midseason challenges. These strategic moves highlight Green Bay’s focus on flexibility and innovation while navigating an unpredictable NFL season.
