Raiders Reportedly Interested in Following Release
Daniel Jones, the former New York Giants quarterback, is expected to attract significant interest in free agency once he clears waivers on Monday. Multiple reports indicate he could decide on his next team quickly.
NFL Media reports that the Las Vegas Raiders are among the teams likely to pursue Jones. The Raiders’ management reportedly sees potential in Jones and might give him an opportunity to finish this season, viewing it as an audition for a bridge-starter role in 2025. The team is also expected to target a quarterback in the early rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft.
However, ESPN notes that Jones may not be inclined to join a team without playoff prospects. Instead, he could prefer signing as a backup for a contending team.
Meanwhile, Fox Sports has confirmed that multiple teams are interested in Jones but did not specify whether the Raiders are among them.
Jones’ release from the Giants on Friday came as a surprise. The 27-year-old was benched earlier in the week and subsequently requested to leave the team. His performance this season has been inconsistent, with 2,070 passing yards, eight touchdowns, seven interceptions, and a 63.3% completion rate. Similar struggles have marked other parts of his six-year NFL career.
For the Raiders, adding Jones could provide an upgrade over their current quarterbacks—Gardner Minshew, Desmond Ridder, and Aidan O’Connell, who is set to return from injured reserve soon. Additionally, if Jones signs with another team in 2025, the Raiders could gain a compensatory draft pick in 2026.
Jones’ next move will be closely watched, as teams assess whether he can still contribute meaningfully in the NFL.
