Yankees Eye Christian Walker for $58 Million Deal
The New York Yankees have been linked to first baseman Christian Walker in recent months. At 33 years old, Walker’s age isn’t ideal, but his consistent offensive production makes him a strong candidate to bolster the Yankees’ lineup. As a proven right-handed slugger, Walker could fill the gap left by Anthony Rizzo.
While the Yankees have internal options and other free-agent first basemen to consider, Walker stands out as a viable solution. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com emphasized Walker’s fit, citing the Yankees’ struggles at first base in 2024, when their .619 OPS was the worst in the American League.
“Walker is the best all-around first baseman on the market, hitting 95 home runs since the start of 2022 while winning three straight Gold Glove Awards,” Feinsand noted on November 25.
Contract Projections
The Yankees must weigh Walker’s age against the value of signing him. A multi-year deal carries risks, but a two-year agreement could be a practical solution. This would allow the team to reassess his performance after the second season.
According to Zachary Roberts of Sportskeeda, the Yankees are projected to sign Walker to a three-year, $58 million contract. Roberts praised Walker as the top first baseman available, combining elite fielding and a strong bat.
Backup Plan Behind Soto
Although the Yankees aim to re-sign Juan Soto as their priority, Walker remains part of their contingency plans. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that if Soto departs, the Yankees may pursue Walker along with moves to strengthen their infield and pitching rotation.
