Mets Sign Former Rival Rewriting Old Feuds
The New York Mets have added a familiar face to their roster by signing reliever to a minor league deal. Cabrera, once at the center of a fiery on-field altercation with the Mets, now has a chance to contribute to the team he once brawled against.
The backstory dates to early 2022 when Mets hitters were being struck by pitches at an alarming rate. A pitch from Cabrera that hit J.D. Davis appeared to be the tipping point. In retaliation, Mets reliever Yoan Lopez threw inside to Cardinals star Nolan Arenado, triggering a benches-clearing brawl. The altercation led to suspensions for both Cabrera and Arenado. Fast-forward to the present, and the dynamics have shifted. Lopez hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2022, Arenado may be on the trade block, and Cabrera is now donning Mets colors.
A Smart, Low-Risk Signing
The Mets’ decision to sign Cabrera demonstrates practicality over lingering rivalries. Key figures from the brawl, such as Lopez and Davis, are no longer part of the team. Even Pete Alonso, another central figure in the scuffle, might leave via free agency.
From a baseball perspective, the move makes sense. Cabrera brings six years of MLB experience, including strong seasons with the Cardinals and Blue Jays, to a bullpen lacking left-handed depth. While his 2024 season with Toronto saw mixed results—a 3.59 ERA but concerning peripherals like a 5.13 FIP and a drop in strikeout rate to 18.5%—his past productivity suggests potential. Cabrera’s hard-throwing arsenal could make him a strong contender for an Opening Day role, likely competing with Danny Young for a left-handed bullpen spot.
High Reward, Zero Risk
As a minor league signing, the deal poses no financial risk to the Mets. Cabrera has the chance to prove his worth, much like Jose Iglesias did for the team last season. While his history with the Mets adds an intriguing narrative, Cabrera’s potential impact as a veteran reliever is the real story.
This signing underscores the Mets’ commitment to rebuilding their bullpen, even if it means making peace with past adversaries.
