Former Padres All-Star Drew With Mariners
Former San Diego Padres All-Star pitcher Drew Pomeranz has joined the Seattle Mariners on a minor league contract, as reported by Aram Leighton.
Pomeranz, who had two separate tenures with the Padres in 2016 and from 2020 to 2021, last appeared in the major leagues in 2021. Originally selected as a first-round pick by Cleveland in the 2010 MLB Draft, Pomeranz was regarded as a top-50 prospect the following year. Cleveland traded him to the Colorado Rockies in July 2011, where he made his MLB debut and remained until 2013. Afterward, he was traded to the Oakland Athletics, where he played two seasons before being dealt to the Padres in December 2015.
Transitioning from a reliever to a starter upon joining San Diego, Pomeranz excelled in 2016, starting 17 games with an 8-7 record, a 2.47 ERA, and 115 strikeouts. This performance earned him an MLB All-Star Game selection, though he was traded midseason to the Boston Red Sox. Pomeranz spent over two seasons with Boston, contributing to the team’s 2018 World Series victory.
In 2019, Pomeranz had brief stints with the San Francisco Giants and Milwaukee Brewers before signing a four-year deal to return to the Padres. During the 2020 season, he thrived as a reliever with a 1.45 ERA over 20 appearances. He posted a 1.75 ERA in 27 games in 2021 before undergoing surgery for a torn flexor tendon, which sidelined him for 2022. Recovery setbacks limited him to seven minor league games in 2023.
The 36-year-old pitcher signed minor league deals with the Los Angeles Angels and Dodgers in 2024 before briefly joining the San Francisco Giants. Now with the Mariners, Pomeranz hopes to revive his career after an injury-plagued few years.
