Virginia Tech Football Faces Potential QB Challenge Against Virginia
The Virginia Tech Hokies might find themselves relying on a third-string quarterback as they gear up for their regular-season finale against Virginia. Head coach Brent Pry provided updates on the team’s quarterback situation, highlighting a concerning scenario for the Hokies, who sit at 5-6 and are fighting for bowl eligibility.
Last year, Virginia Tech entered the same matchup with a 5-6 record but carried optimism as the team appeared to be turning a corner under Pry’s leadership. The emergence of Kyron Drones at quarterback added to the hope. This year, expectations were even higher, with many anticipating the Hokies as a potential surprise contender for the College Football Playoff (CFP). Pry successfully retained key players, building excitement among fans and analysts alike.
However, the 2024 season has been disappointing. Sitting at 5-6 again, fans and alumni are frustrated. As the Hokies prepare to host Virginia at Lane Stadium, questions loom about whether supporters will turn out to watch the team maintain its dominance over the Cavaliers.
Injuries have plagued the quarterback position. Drones has dealt with lingering issues, missing games against Syracuse and Duke before playing an impaired game against Clemson. He was sidelined last week, allowing Collin Schlee to start. Unfortunately, Schlee also sustained an injury, leading to redshirt freshman William “Pop” Watson stepping in.
Watson completed 12 of 25 passes for 146 yards with an interception in his appearance and may be in line for his first college start. Pry shared that both Drones and Schlee are questionable, with no definitive answers on their availability. Both remain in treatment, though Schlee appears slightly ahead in recovery. To prepare, Pry and his staff have been working with four quarterbacks, including Watson and freshman Davi Belfort, who is receiving additional practice reps.
It’s an uncertain and challenging situation for Virginia Tech as they aim to secure a crucial victory.
