Astros Target Jorge Polanco as Possible Replacement for Alex Bregman
The Houston Astros are preparing for the possibility of losing Alex Bregman, with veteran infielder Jorge Polanco emerging as a potential replacement. According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the Astros have expressed interest in Polanco as part of a backup plan while continuing negotiations to re-sign Bregman. They are also exploring the market for another free agent, Willy Adames. Polanco appears to be the team’s contingency option if both Bregman and Adames become unattainable.
Polanco, 31, is a switch-hitter who earned an All-Star nod in 2019 with the Minnesota Twins. Known for his offensive abilities, Polanco had a standout 2021 season, hitting 33 home runs. Last season, he played for the Seattle Mariners, where he recorded 16 home runs and 45 RBIs over 118 games. However, his batting average dropped to a career-low .213. A versatile infielder, Polanco has primarily played shortstop and second base but has also made occasional starts at third base, making him a potential fit for Houston’s infield needs.
Meanwhile, retaining Bregman may prove challenging for the Astros. The two-time All-Star and Gold Glove third baseman, represented by agent Scott Boras, is reportedly seeking a significant contract extension. This has led Houston to explore alternative options. Polanco offers a more cost-effective solution, though he is unlikely to match Bregman’s level of performance or popularity among fans.
Adding to the Astros’ considerations is their interest in Willy Adames, another infielder with a strong defensive reputation and offensive potential. While the team is actively pursuing all options, Polanco’s availability could provide the flexibility needed if other deals fall through.
Though replacing Bregman with Polanco may not generate much excitement in Houston, it reflects the Astros’ pragmatic approach to managing their roster and payroll. Polanco’s experience and versatility could make him a viable option at third base should Bregman depart. For now, the Astros remain focused on re-signing Bregman but appear ready with alternative plans to address their infield situation.
