Former Virginia Tech and Oklahoma State wide receiver Da’Wain Lofton has announced his intention to enter the transfer portal, seeking a new opportunity for his final year of college eligibility. With the conclusion of the 2024 college football regular season, the transfer portal officially opens on December 9, though many players, including Lofton, have already declared their plans to transfer.
Lofton, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound receiver from Fort Worth, Texas, spent the 2024 season with Oklahoma State. However, injuries significantly impacted his year, limiting him to just six receptions for 140 yards. His most notable play came on October 26, with a 56-yard catch during the Cowboys’ 38-28 loss to Baylor. It was his only catch of that game. Lofton didn’t see the field until mid-season, further hindering his ability to make a substantial impact.
Before joining Oklahoma State, Lofton played three seasons for Virginia Tech. His 2021 campaign included seven catches for 98 yards and a touchdown.
The following year, he recorded his best statistical season with the Hokies, hauling in 22 receptions for 254 yards and two touchdowns. In 2023, his production dipped to just six catches for 58 yards.
Lofton’s decision to leave Virginia Tech came after a crowded wide receiver room diminished his chances of significant playing time. When four wideouts—Jaylin Lane, Da’Quan Felton, Stephen Gosnell, and Ali Jennings—announced they would return for the 2024 season, it became clear that Lofton’s opportunities in Blacksburg would be limited.
Now entering the portal again, Lofton will look for a program where he can play a more prominent role in the offense. His experience at two schools and flashes of talent suggest he could be a valuable addition to a team in need of an experienced receiver.
With December shaping up to be a busy month for college football between the transfer portal and early signing period, Lofton’s journey underscores the dynamic nature of modern college football. Wherever he lands, fans and analysts alike will hope he finds a program where he can thrive and make the most of his final season.
