Official Tigers News: More Bad News For Tigers As Another Top Talented Fans Favorite Superstar Annouced His Decision To Enter Transfer Portal

Clemson Defensive. Reportedly Entering Transfer Portal

Clemson junior safety is reportedly planning to enter the NCAA transfer portal when it opens on Monday, according to On3 Sports. Covil, a former four-star recruit from Virginia, has played in 32 games during his time with the Tigers but has seen his role diminish this season.

Covil began the 2023 season with promise, even earning his first career start in Clemson’s matchup against Florida State. However, his playing time has significantly decreased in recent weeks. Over the last six games, Covil logged just 15 defensive snaps and did not appear in any capacity—defense or special teams—during Clemson’s victory over South Carolina last weekend.

Throughout his Clemson career, Covil has tallied 36 tackles, including 22 solo stops, one tackle for loss, and one pass deflection. This season, he played a total of 123 defensive snaps but struggled to maintain a consistent role in the lineup as the year progressed. Standing 5-foot-11 and weighing 200 pounds, Covil brings a solid skill set and experience to whichever program he joins next.

Covil is the second Clemson player to announce plans to enter the transfer portal this week, following redshirt junior wide receiver Troy Stellato. Stellato, who also saw limited opportunities with the Tigers, did not travel with the team for Saturday’s ACC Championship Game against SMU in Charlotte. While head coach Dabo Swinney confirmed Stellato’s absence, it remains unclear if Covil will be part of the team’s dress list for the game.

A highly regarded recruit out of high school, Covil was ranked No. 205 nationally in the class of 2022. Despite his talent, he was unable to carve out a prominent role in Clemson’s defense, leading to his decision to seek opportunities elsewhere.

As the transfer portal continues to reshape college football rosters, Covil’s departure signals another adjustment for Clemson as they prepare for the postseason and beyond. The safety’s decision opens a door for him to find a program where he can secure more playing time and make a greater impact on the field.
