ESPN Sad News REPORT: Another Florida State Fans Favorite Tight End Rejects New Deal And Entering NCAA Transfer Portal

Florida State junior tight end Brian Courtney is the latest Seminole to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, marking ten scholarship departures from the team this offseason. The 20-day winter transfer window officially began at midnight on Monday, and activity has been brisk across college football.

Courtney has concluded his third season with the Seminoles, having contributed primarily as a rotational offensive player and key special teams member. In 2024, he appeared in all 14 games, including one start. Notably, he recorded a tackle and successfully caught a two-point conversion in the season opener against Georgia Tech. Additionally, Courtney showcased his utility in the 2022 Cheez-It Bowl against Oklahoma, where he secured another two-point conversion. Over his time in Tallahassee, the Virginia native participated in 38 games.

Originally recruited as a three-star prospect in 2022, Courtney made the transition from quarterback to tight end upon joining the Seminoles. Unfortunately, this position switch didn’t yield the hoped-for results for either party. Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 240 pounds, Courtney is expected to have one year of college eligibility remaining.

Florida State has seen significant roster turnover following a challenging 2-10 season. Courtney joins nine other scholarship players leaving the program, including wide receiver Deuce Spann, tight end Jackson West, defensive end Byron Turner Jr., defensive tackle Tomiwa Durojaiye, defensive back Omarion Cooper, linebacker Omar Graham Jr., wide receiver Destyn Hill, defensive end Lamont Green Jr., and offensive lineman Julian Armella.

Despite the departures, the Seminoles retain three scholarship tight ends eligible to return for the 2024 season: redshirt junior Jerrale Powers, and sophomores Landen Thomas and Amaree Williams. Additionally, Florida State bolstered the position by signing four-star tight end Chase Loftin during the Early Signing Period.

This wave of transfers underlines the challenges facing Florida State as they rebuild and prepare for the upcoming season, while providing departing players like Courtney opportunities to find new programs better suited to their talents and aspirations.
