Minnesota Vikings quarterback Daniel Jones is making headlines following his move to the practice squad after being released by the New York Giants. The Vikings’ quarterback lineup now includes Sam Darnold as the starter, injured rookie J.J. McCarthy, and Jones, who joined the team less than a month ago. Despite leaving the Giants, Jones displayed a thoughtful gesture by gifting Clase Azul tequila to the offensive linemen who protected him during his time in New York.
“Daniel Jones with a class move,” ESPN’s Jordan Raanan shared on December 20. Clase Azul bottles range from around $100 to thousands of dollars, reflecting Jones’ appreciation for his former teammates.
Jones’ future with the Vikings remains uncertain, but his financial earnings are substantial. After signing a four-year, $160 million deal in 2023, he has accumulated $108.1 million in career earnings. The Giants are carrying a $69.3 million dead cap charge, including a $47.1 million hit for 2024, the second-largest in NFL history.
While Jones adjusts to his new role, speculation about his potential contributions to the Vikings continues. Veteran offensive lineman and former teammate Justin Pugh suggested Jones could step into a role similar to what Darnold held this season. Pugh acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Darnold’s future, mentioning possible moves back to the New York Jets or even the Giants.
Jones’ path in Minnesota may also depend on rookie J.J. McCarthy’s recovery. McCarthy, the No. 10 overall draft pick, showed promise during the preseason before tearing his meniscus in August, sidelining him for the year. While McCarthy is expected to return for training camp, his absence has delayed his development, potentially opening opportunities for Jones to contribute in 2025.
Although Darnold has performed well as the starter, his inconsistencies have raised questions about whether head coach Kevin O’Connell might have considered McCarthy or another option had the rookie been healthy. McCarthy’s recovery timeline and readiness will be crucial, and Jones could serve as either a capable backup or a fill-in starter if needed.
With 50 quarterbacks starting at least one NFL game this season and 14 teams using multiple QBs, Jones offers valuable depth for the Vikings as they navigate their quarterback situation moving forward.
