The New York Yankees have signed right-handed pitcher Colten Brewer to a minor league contract, marking his third stint with the organization. Brewer, 31, previously spent time with the Yankees in 2016 and 2023.
Brewer’s 2024 season with the Chicago Cubs was marred by injury. On July 6, after a challenging relief appearance against the Los Angeles Angels at Wrigley Field—where he allowed three runs (one earned) in two-thirds of an inning—Brewer punched a dugout wall in frustration, fracturing his left (non-pitching) hand. This incident led the Cubs to place him on the 60-day injured list.
Prior to his injury, Brewer appeared in 16 games for the Cubs, posting a 5.66 ERA with 22 strikeouts. After the season, he was removed from the Cubs’ 40-man roster and elected free agency.
Brewer’s professional journey has been extensive. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2011 and later joined the Yankees in 2016 through the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft. He has also pitched for the San Diego Padres, Boston Red Sox, Kansas City Royals, and had a stint with the Hanshin Tigers in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball.
The Yankees are hopeful that Brewer can rebound from his injury and contribute to their pitching depth in the upcoming season. His prior experience with the organization and versatility as a reliever could make him a valuable asset if he returns to form.
