Russell Wilson Takes Accountability for Mistakes in Steelers’ Loss to Ravens
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson has been pivotal in the team’s strong start to the 2024 season. However, after a 34-17 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on December 21, Wilson shouldered the blame for key mistakes that contributed to the defeat, marking Pittsburgh’s second consecutive loss.
“I put that game on me in the sense of there are two great opportunities there,” Wilson said postgame, referencing costly turnovers.
Key Mistakes Define Steelers’ Loss
The game was a tale of missed opportunities for Pittsburgh, with two critical errors by Wilson shifting the momentum.
In the first half, Wilson fumbled inside Baltimore’s 5-yard line, negating a potential scoring drive. Late in the fourth quarter, he threw an interception to Ravens defensive back Marlon Humphrey, who returned it for a touchdown, sealing Baltimore’s commanding win.
“I tried to cut back and just got hit. Right before I hit the ground, the ball came out,” Wilson explained about the fumble. “Unacceptable. It can’t happen.”
On the interception, Wilson admitted, “The interception just hurt us. Really, just two negative plays.”

Despite the errors, Wilson showcased flashes of brilliance. He demonstrated enhanced mobility, kept plays alive under pressure, and delivered accurate passes on the run.

“I was going for it [the touchdown],” Wilson said. “I’m not going to fear going for it. I’ve gotta watch it to see if I should have gone right or not.”
The Steelers managed to tie the game again in the third quarter, but another interception in the fourth — Wilson’s worst pass of the season — dashed Pittsburgh’s comeback hopes.

The Ravens’ 17-point victory marked the largest margin of victory in the Ravens-Steelers rivalry since 2017. It was also Wilson’s first game this season with multiple turnovers.
Wilson Calls for Resilience

“There’s still football to be played,” Wilson said. “The reality is that we really have to respond in the right way after this one. I don’t think there’s enough time to sulk. We play on Wednesday.”
With just four days to prepare, the Steelers face a daunting challenge against the 14-1 Kansas City Chiefs on December 25. The loss to the Ravens puts additional pressure on Pittsburgh, as they now need to win their final two games to secure a home playoff game.
