Official Hokies News: Love Virginia Tech I Will Remain Here Forever Top Experienced Fans Favorite QB Pledge To Return In 2025 To Hokies Football

Virginia Tech received a much-needed boost on Friday as quarterbacks Kyron Drones and William “Pop” Watson announced their return for the 2025 season. The news comes during a hectic week for college football and the Hokies, with the NCAA transfer portal opening on Monday and over two dozen Virginia Tech players entering it.

While the volume of departures sparked concern on social media, it reflects the current state of college sports. Many players likely had frank discussions with their coaches about their development and potential roles on the team. However, some exits were notable, including redshirt sophomore left tackle Xavier Chaplin, who is being courted by other programs with significant offers. With Virginia Tech lacking an offensive line coach, Chaplin’s return remains uncertain as he explores other options.

Despite the challenges, the return of Drones and Watson provides stability at quarterback. Drones, who faced a challenging season due to injuries and inconsistent passing, would have been a prime target in the portal. Watson, a redshirt freshman, impressed in his first career start against Virginia, showcasing his potential. Heading into spring practice, Drones is expected to remain the starter, but Watson will compete for the role. Head coach Brent Pry, under pressure to deliver results next season, will prioritize the player who offers the best chance to win.

Virginia Tech still has significant work to do in the portal, needing replacements for numerous departures via transfer or graduation. Additionally, Pry must address gaps in his coaching staff after parting ways with three coaches this week.

Friday’s developments highlight a positive step for the Hokies, ensuring stability at the most critical position while laying the groundwork for a competitive 2025 season. While challenges remain, securing both quarterbacks signals a win for Pry and his team amid the upheaval.
