Auburn Defensive Back Enters Transfer Portal
The Auburn Tigers continue to experience roster changes as they build their team through recruiting and the transfer portal. Defensive back C.J. Johnson has entered the transfer portal, according to Caleb Jones, making him the fourth Auburn defensive back and third safety to seek opportunities elsewhere this season.
At this time, Johnson’s next destination remains uncertain. The 6-foot-2, 198-pound redshirt freshman from Katy, Texas, did not see game action during his two seasons with the Tigers. A former three-star recruit, Johnson was ranked as the No. 58 safety in the class of 2023 by 247Sports. During his senior year at Paetow High School, Johnson led his team with 68 tackles, showcasing his defensive potential.
Johnson committed to Auburn on January 8, 2023, signing his National Letter of Intent the same day. He chose Auburn over several other programs, including Louisville, Boston College, and Missouri. Despite the promising start to his collegiate career, Johnson is now seeking a new opportunity to contribute on the field.
His decision to transfer follows a trend among Auburn defensive backs. Starting safety Caleb Wooden, reserve safety Laquan Robinson, and cornerback Antonio Kite, who was dismissed from the program in October, have all exited the team this season.
While Auburn has faced some attrition in its defensive backfield, the Tigers are actively replenishing their roster. Head coach Hugh Freeze and his staff have secured commitments from two highly rated safeties in the 2025 recruiting class. Anquon Fegans, ranked as the No. 3 safety nationally by ESPN, and Eric Winters, ranked No. 7 by 247Sports, will join the program in the 2025 season.
Auburn’s efforts in the transfer portal have also been impactful. The Tigers’ transfer portal class is ranked No. 4 nationally, trailing only Texas Tech, LSU, and Ole Miss, according to 247Sports.
As the Tigers continue to navigate player departures and new additions, Johnson’s departure marks another chapter in their evolving roster strategy. Both Johnson and the Auburn program will now look to their respective futures as the offseason progresses.
